Tutorial – Dark Art

For two years now, Grafolog has been publishing tutorials on his blog. These tutorials have allowed everyone to learn how to use Photoshop and to reproduce various effects.
From Photoshop 7 to Photoshop CS5, learn how to master the different tools and windows available with each version and to achieve creative effects according to your needs and wants. This month, our attention was caught by the tutorial that shows you how to make a « Dark Art » effect, which is to give a regular picture a strange and worrying aura…


1- To start, download the following three pictures.

Import the Eye picture into your Photoshop document.

2- Duplicate your layer (Ctrl+J) then go to Menu > Image > adjustments > Hue / Saturation and save the following settings :

3- Add a fusion mask by going to Menu > Layer > Layer mask > reveal all

Now, select the Brush Tool (B) and the Black color, then select the mask and cover the iris with black. This will hide the covered zone to let the layer beneath appear.

4- Duplicate the layer and change its Blending modes into Multiply

5- Import the rust texture (Rust.jpg) into your document.

Change its blending modes into overlay

6- We are now going to repeat step 3 with the fusion mask. This time, cover the whole eye with Black. The texture will only be applied to the skin, so to achieve the following result :

7- Now import the second texture: cracked mud.

In Menu > Image > Settings > Hue/Saturation and save the following settings:

8- Press Ctrl+T and reduce the size of the pictures’ texture, until it is no wider than the internal sides of the eye.

9- Change its blending mode into overlay, set opacity settings on 53% and erase any part located outside the white of the eye.

10- Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N) and fill it with the following color : #828282 (use the Paint Bucket Tool (G)

Change its blending mode into overlay

11- Now on this last layer, use the density tools (O) « + » and « – »

Use the “density tools –“ on the pupil contours

And the « density tool + » on the lashes and image contours.

12- In the end, create a new layer and fill it with GWhite, then in Menu > Filters > Render > Lighting Effects save the following settings:
